The story follows Jack, whose plans to make fifth grade his best year ever vanish when his parents announce a big move from small-town Ohio to the wilds of Alaska. Jack says goodbye to everything he knows to explore a world of forests, mountains, and moose. On his first day at school, a lonely Jack wanders to the playground border and meets an unlikely friend and guide—a grumpy talking lynx named Athens, who will make this a year Jack never forgets.

With the help of Analisa and a supportive teacher, Carter embarks on a heart-wrenching quest to face the ultimate decision: to restore his mother’s lost joy, even if it means saying goodbye.
